August/September Update

Here I am finally getting around to posting.

Right after getting home from my family Reunion I was called as the Primary President. Life has been nonstop since, like it ever wasn’t nonstop. Our ward was split just before my call so I had to organize all the new classes and call what felt like a gazillion primary workers. I am working hard at finalizing the primary program. Thankfully our previous president had me in charge of it this year so it was pretty much done before the split.

The kids of course are all back in school. Katya loves kindergarten, but already asking why she has to do homework and says it’s hard. I’m afraid I have another fight on my hands with homework. Hopefully I’m WRONG. Brigham is in his last year of elementary school and is really enjoying it. His teacher has them do things at home for homework, but it’s not structured and not turned in. Just whatever the kid wants to work on. This has been wonderful for Brigham. He comes home and works hard for about 20 minutes and then he’s done. No more checking off homework or hounding him to get it done. He motivates himself, which is great. Who knew that is what he needed.
Kyler is in a 2nd and 3rd grade split class. She does 3rd grade math and English, they do a combination reading and then science and social studies is 2nd grade. She absolutely loves her class and her teacher. It is fun to see her challenged (slightly). She is still doing amazing, but it takes a tad more work, I think. She was invited to participate in a challenge science group. Friday they shot off rockets. She really liked it. Daniel has been working hard this year. He and Kyler have the same homework and spelling so I think it gives him a reason to try harder. Plus I think it’s fun for them to work together a bit. His teacher is by far much better than last year’s. She is fun and energetic and always has a smile on her face. Last week Daniel had me bring Gammon in for Share. He loved sharing all about him and answering about 20 questions. It was really cute. All Gammon did was sit on the stool picking his nose. The kids got a kick out of that.

We have started back up on piano after a summer of hiatus because I was so sick. Katya also started tumbling again. She is constantly trying new tricks.

Joseph has been traveling quite a bit lately. He is on a project that keeps him very busy. He travels to Bloomington, IL about once a month. This project will last through December. He is thrilled to not be in the bishopric anymore. He is teaching 13-14 year old Sunday school and you’d think he was in heaven. We get to drive the same car to church, which hasn’t happened in oh say 8 ½ years. He feels like a free man. I am enjoying him home more and appreciating all the extra help around the house and with the kids.

The canning has been nonstop since the beginning of August. Friends gave me both apricots and plums. Then the tomatoes started coming on. I was afraid of not having enough and so Melissa’s parents graciously brought some of mom’s up after Darien’s blessing. Just as I finished those up our tomatoes came on with a vengeance. I have done 49 pints of salsa, 24 quarts whole tomatoes, 2 batches of soup and 24 quarts of a tomato, vegetable barley soup I make. The tomatoes are still coming which is wonderful. I will keep canning until there are no more ripe tomatoes to can. Who knows how next year will be with a new baby and all.

I think that’s about all for now. We are now gearing up for fall and the holidays. We are deciding on costumes for Halloween, planning for mom and dad’s trip up here and writing Christmas lists for Santa. Yes, Santa has already started shopping you know. You better get those lists in soon.

Congratulations on your new calling as Primary President. I hope you've got some great counselors to help when baby comes. I was lucky enough to be released as Primary Presdent right before Micah was born. Then shortly after, Guy was called as Elders Quorum President. We just can't get a break. I love reading all your updates. Good luck preparing for your new little one.
